چکیده
We advance the hypothesis here tha t the higher-than-average vocal p itch (F0) found fo r speech o f B roca’s-aphasics in experim ental settings is due, in p a rt, to increased psychological stress. Two experim ents w ere conducted which m an ipu lated conversational constraints and the sentence form s to be produced by aphasic patients. O ur study revealed significant differences between changes in vocal pitch o f agram m atic B roca’s aphasics versus those o f W ernicke’s aphasics and norm al controls. It is suggested that the greater psychological stress experienced by the B roca’s aphasics, bu t no t by the W ernicke’s aphasics, accounts fo r these observed differences.

Psychological stress in Broca's versus Wernicke's aphasia
We advance the hypothesis here that the higher-than-average vocal pitch (FO) found for speech of Broca’s.aphasics in experimental settings is due, in part, to increased psychological stress. Two experiments were conducted which manipulated conversational constraints and the sentence forms to be produced by aphasic patients. Our study revealed significant differences between changes in vocal pit...
متن کاملSentence production with verbs of alternating transitivity in agrammatic Broca’s aphasia
Bastiaanse, Koekkoek And Van Zonneveld (2003) hypothesized that individuals with Broca’s aphasia have problems with sentences in which the verb and its arguments are not in their base position. The present study is meant to test this hypothesis with the help of verbs with alternating transitivity: transitive: the boy breaks the glass; intransitive or unaccusative: the glass breaks. Superficiall...
متن کاملLexical competition eVects in aphasia: Deactivation of lexical candidates in spoken word processing
Research has shown that Broca’s and Wernicke’s aphasic patients show diVerent impairments in auditory lexical processing. The results of an experiment with form-overlapping primes showed an inhibitory eVect of form-overlap for control adults and a weak inhibition trend for Broca’s aphasic patients, but a facilitatory eVect of form-overlap was found for Wernicke’s aphasic participants. This sugg...
متن کاملNeighbourhood density effects in auditory nonword processing in aphasia
The question how prior knowledge of words affects processing of nonwords is important with respect to the study of lexical access and lexical competition. According to the Neighbourhood Activation model (Luce & Pisoni, 1998), the auditory presentation of a word or nonword yields automatic activation of all words in the mental lexicon that sound similar. Experimental results with unimpaired list...
متن کاملThe pursuit of brain-language relationships.
The past century has been a time of many new developments in the fields of language and neuroscience. We have seen the growth of linguistics and the application of its theories to the study of aphasia. We have learned much about neurophysiology and neural structures and the mechanisms of brain injury and recovery. At the same time, the prevailing model concerning the brain areas that subserve l...
